From Bach to Bogdanivoč with a touch of New Zealand

Christopher Everest presents a programme of diverse works for the Classical Guitar based around 'Fantasies' and 'Variations'. This concert is part of a national tour sponsored by 'The Waikanae Music Society' and aims to raise awareness of NZ classical guitar and widen the scope of the perceived repertoire for the instrument.

Christopher Everest began learning the classical guitar in 2016, receiving lessons as a ‘second study’ whilst studying jazz guitar at the NZSM. After taking a year out from study, he returned to the NZSM in 2018 to pursue classical guitar full-time under the tutelage of Dr. Jane Curry. During this time, he has been fortunate to participate in masterclasses with Tariq Harb, Barkin Sertkaya, Giovanni Grano, Gian Marco Ciampa, Minh Le Hoang, and Martha Masters.

Over the summer of 2019 – 2020, Chris studied with Dr Paul Cesarczyk at Mahidol College of Music, Thailand thanks to the assistance of the Freemasons Lankhuyzen/Whetu-Kairangi and Victoria Abroad, focusing on classical guitar pedagogy and history.

After returning to NZ, he won 3rd place in the 2020 Biennial New Zealand Classical Guitar Competition and became the first classical guitarist to receive the Waikanae Music Society’s Young Musicians Award.

Christopher has been fortunate to tour with the New Baroque Generation (Archlute and 19th century guitar), the 'Kowhaiwhai Duo' and as a soloist. He has also had the pleasure of playing with Sinfonia for Hope Orchestra, Wellington Youth Orchestra, premiering the 2019 and 2020 Matthew Marshall Composition winning pieces for classical guitar, featured in both the 2020 and 2021 Tairawhiti Museum concert series, and performs regularly with ensembles such as 'Mountain Woods Duo' (guitar/flute duo), 'What the Pluck?' (guitar quartet), SMP Ensemble.
