Enter into the world of the big blue with no need for tanks. Join New Zealand Diving and learn to Freedive in the safe confinements of a 5m deep swimming pool. Once you have your SSI Basic Freediving certification, New Zealand Diving will take you out on a spearfishing charter for you to practise your newly learned skills.
Once you sign up for the freediving course there is a digital learning aspect that needs to be completed in your own time prior to the pool session
The Combo course will be completed over two sessions:
Day 1: Freediving - pool session
Day 2: Spearfishing Charter
You must be able to swim at least 200m non-stop without fins or buoyancy device.
The freediving course provides you with the training and knowledge required to safely freedive with a buddy in a pool (confined water environment) to a depth of five meters. You will learn and develop skills that will train your body how to control your breathing and be more efficient with oxygen, gain better respiration and muscle flexibility.
Whether you’re an experienced scuba diver, snorkelling enthusiast or have just discovered the sport of spearfishing and you want to become a spearfisher, freediving is the logical first step in acquiring the fundamental skills and safety requirements needed to maximise your spearfishing experience.
Spearfishing offers a totally different experience in comparison to scuba diving, without the aid of artificial breathing apparatus and the hiss of regulators scaring all the fish away, the opportunity to encounter fish life up close and personal increases dramatically.
Spearfishing is the only truly sustainable method of fishing due to its selective single fish targeting.

SSI Basic Freediving certification is awarded on satisfaction of your instructor
Check you are medically fit to dive with the Diver Medical Questionnaire. If you answer yes to any question on the form you need to get a medical clearance from your doctor. Some pre-existing medical conditions (eg asthma, heart conditions, etc) may prevent you from diving, please consult your doctor.
