Bienvenue à tous!

This year marks the 21st Fête du cinéma d'animation from Alliance Française and L’Institut Français! Held in locations across France and around the world, it offers a selection of animated French films. Following our children’s screenings on Wednesday 12 to Sunday 16 October, join us for two films suited to an older audience.

2.30pm: The Crossing by Florence Miailhe

Fleeing their war-torn home, siblings Kyona and Adriel are separated from their parents. They embark on a journey which takes them from childhood to adolescence through a continent grappling with conflict and persecution. This beautifully animated, multi-award-winning film is a story of immigration, hope, and survival.

Based on her grandmother’s experiences leaving Odessa with a Russian Jewish community after 1905, Florence Miailhe’s tale will move all ages. Her flamboyant use of oil paint on glass is simply dazzling!

Rated R13, 84 mins. French with English subtitles

3.55pm: INTERMISSION

4:10pm: Fantastic Planet by René Laloux

In this classic science fiction animation, giant, blue Draags dominate the planet Ygam, raising tiny human beings called Oms as pets. One Om, Terr, escapes from his gigantic child captor and is swept up by a band of Oms resisting their oppression.

Will the Oms and the Draags find a way to coexist? Or will they destroy each other?

Based on the novel Oms en série by Stefan Wul, this Cannes-awarded film features cut-out animation and a psychedelic jazz score.

Rated M, 72 mins. French with English subtitles

Finishes at approximately 5.25pm.
