HBAF 2022 - Nuit Blanche - Art After Dark

A night of brilliant performances and magical discoveries when Napier’s galleries, back alleys, carparks and lanes will feature contemporary art exhibitions, installations, live music, DJ’s, moving image projections, dance and street performance.

Discover the city through the lens of the arts, and enjoy it with the whole family. Grab a drink or bite to eat from the local bars, cafés or restaurants alongside delicious offerings from local food trucks and pop-up stalls.

Explore the galleries in Napier’s Arts Quarter including CAN, Tennyson Gallery, Boyd-Dunlop Gallery, Dept. of Curiosities and Fine Things, Cathedral Photo and Art Gallery, SPA_CE, The Pottery Studio, MTG Hawke’s Bay and many more. Meet the artists and interact with each gallery’s unique presentation for the night and be sure to visit Wardini Books for a late-night experience.

Don’t miss the mesmerising 'The Air Between Us' aerial dance by Chloe Loftus and Rodney Bell or 'Out of the Blue' a technicolor illuminated shoal of fish and 'Flames of Plenty' dancers, both roaming the streets of the CBD.

Check out 'Biggie & Smalls 2v2 All Style Dance Battle' brought to you by Projekt Team, New Zealand’s Hip Hop and Street Dance Collective, with some of the baddest freestyle names in the country, teamed up with new and emerging freestyle dancers from Te Matau a Maui and the East Coast.

Find Katja Starke’s 'Compliment Cycle', a feel good, interactive, light-up-in-the-dark, whimsical and roaming street performance act, complete with flowers and a typewriter to capture your compliment for a friend or a stranger.

Take in the Hawke’s Bay Soul Choir pop-up performances directed by internationally recognised choirmaster Stephan Zebe, with a unique repertoire to suit all soul, disco and Motown fans. End the night dancing away to some funky grooves by local Dj’s and bands.

MTG HAWKE’S BAY: Lit up for Nuit Blanche! Bring the kids along to create a special artwork using colour and light.
THE RABBIT ROOM: Video work collectively called Dear Hart by Brit Bunkley.
MORGANMADE: A pottery studio and store run by artist Holly Morgan. Come and see the light sculpture work.
DEPARTMENT OF CURIOSITIES AND FINE THINGS: This year will have the 'interactive wall'.
TENNYSON GALLERY: Art and fashion collide - live models in artful creations will circulate in the candlelit gallery space.
WARDINI BOOKS: Gareth Ward will be in character as Tarquin the Honest, Wizard of the Silver Weasel, liar, coward, charlatan and cheat.
BOYD-DUNLOP GALLERY: Contemporary artworks by local and national artists showcases work from its stable of exhibiting artists and more.
CAN – CREATIVE ARTS NAPIER: Celebrate spring by taking part in ‘Colour My Blooms’, a fun interactive family event featuring renowned artist John Lancashire. Take selfies with the CAN Furry Squad.
NAPIER LIBRARY: Slimy Art. Create your own colourful tactile artwork with slime. Suitable for 5 – 12 years. Come and join us from 6 – 8pm.
AHURIRI GALLERY: Hye Rim Lee - solo show - a survey of works by international digital artist Hye Rim Lee.
ARCADE GALLERY: Opening night! Upbeat music and urban art specials to celebrate Napier's newest and edgiest art gallery.
CATHEDRAL GALLERY: Run by Richard Wood and Chris Helliwell, photographers and printmakers in their own right.
STUDIO TINKADOODLE: Come and make your own photographic collage.
POTTERY STUDIO: Make a free dipping bowl – there will be a charge for firing / sending.
BLOOM BOUQUETS: Video of a time lapsed opening flower this is a static display the premises are not open.
