Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade
Warm the cockles of your heart this winter with the sweet sounds of Love Triumphant. In a tribute to romance and fancy, violinist extraordinaire Hilary Hahn performs Ernest Chausson’s Poéme. Initially inspired by his friend Ivan Turgenev’s novella The Song of Love Triumphant, Chausson’s Poéme is a rhapsody of “Wagnerian, Parisian hothouse moodiness” (The Strad). In this, the third work performed in as many days, Hahn will imbue this best-loved of Chausson’s works with her trademark supple musical athleticism, her golden tone, and her ever-questing artistry.
Rimsky Korsakov’s Scheherazade similarly sketches out a great love story: the framing narrative of the Arabian Nights, in which the clever Scheherazade bewitches her Sultan husband with spellbinding tall tales of sailors, genies and adventure. Rimsky-Korsakov’s work will bewitch you too, with its portrait of the dazzling world of Middle Eastern folklore. Thanks to endlessly catchy tunes, and showcasing Rimsky-Korsakov’s one-of-a-kind gift for creating ravishing orchestral colour, let Scheherazade sweep you away into aromatic gardens with a romancing prince and princess, and onto rollicking seas with the swashbuckling hero Sinbad the Sailor.
