Enjoy a walk to Kahuwera Pā site (Ngāre Raumati) which will allow an opportunity to reconnect with our Whakapapa to Ngāre Raumati.

Kahuwera Pā on the Paroa Peninsula is a defended headland pa that features strongly in the historically significant Bay of Islands.

Alison Jones will be on hand to talk about some of the history of Kahuwera Pā.

Alison is the author (with Kuni Kaa Jenkins) of the book Tuai: A Traveller in Two Worlds. Tuai of Ngare Raumati, younger brother of Korokoro, nephew of Kaipo, travelled to England in 1818 and witnessed the Industrial Revolution. He lived at Kahuwera Pā and died in the Bay of Islands in 1824. Alison, a pākeha from Auckland, is a professor at Te Puna Wānanga, School of Māori Indigenous Education at the University of Auckland.

Details:

- Meet at Paroa Bay turn-off by 9.15 then we will all travel to the Farm Managers site to access Kahuwera.
- Bring walking shoes
- It is a short walk but there will be lots of discussion up at Kahuwera.

The walk is followed by a lunch at Sage Restaurant. The lunch cost is $65 per head and there is a maximum of 45 seats for lunch therefore call or email the restaurant directly as soon as possible if you would like one of these seats.

We will leave Kahuwera at 12.15pm to allow those who have reserved lunch to make their way to Sage Restaurant by 12.30pm.

This event was hugely popular last year and we are delighted to host it again as part of the Matariki Pewhairangi celebrations.

PRICE: Guided walk free, optional lunch $65ph

BOOKINGS: Call Sage Restaurant at Paroa Bay on 09-403 8270 rt@paroabay.com (lunch only).
