What happens when you encounter a script you don’t read? What poetic possibilities are in translation (or mystery)?
In this three-hour National Poetry Day workshop, you will:
* explore New Zealand’s only collection of Chinese letterpress type,
* choose a hanzi character,
* be guided to write creative responses in English inspired by that character,
* handset your words in metal type, and
* produce a collaborative letterpress print using the historic equipment at Wai-te-ata Press.
No prior experience or Chinese language ability necessary, all welcome!
This workshop is part of the public programming for the exhibition "The Voice of Kaishu: A typographic journey" from Wednesday 14 September to Wednesday 26 October at Wai-te-ata Press, Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
