Modern Matariki Hāngī with Joe McLeod inside the Begonia House at Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā.

Kia ora koutou na Mōrehu o Te Whanganui a Tara kua tae atu, ki tēnei o taku hotaka, Te Pae Umu Marumaru o Ngāi Māori, tihei mauri ora. It is with honour and privilege that Joe presents a Native Māori Food Art form once practised daily on the Pā now known as a Marae during pre-European times. Joe will introduce to you, native plants used in the cooking of the food, native plants specific to the foods, and the foods specifically cooked inside the Umu, various other Umu used by the old Māori chef known as the "Tohunga Tumau", to enjoy the outcome and a meal for you to experience.

Joe McLeod is on a mission to revitalise Aotearoa’s traditional Maori cuisine. Inside the lush Begonia House, Joe will tantalise your tastebuds with amazing natural foods prepared in a traditional way with a modern twist. Drawing on decades of experience you will learn about how native plant flavours can enhance cooking and your health.

Includes lunch meal and presentation followed by time for questions.

The Begonia House doors open at 11.45am with a 12noon start.
