Hayley Smith
Ngāti Ranginui, Ngai Te Rangi Descent.

Landscape Portraits and Mahi Toi; Using Earth Pigments derived from Papatūānuku creating paints and dyes on a selection of different mediums.
Looking to bring some of our local archived history of our people, our Whakapapa back to the realm of 'modern' Te Ao Māori. Sharing basic knowledge and learnings with our people through Mahi Toi - creating conversation and weaving threads linking to our past.

"Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua" I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past.

This whakataukī or 'proverb' speaks to Māori perspectives of time, where the past, the present and the future are viewed as intertwined, and life as a continuous cosmic process...

On display in Okorore- Ngā Toi Māori Gallery & Studios, 3rd June - 10th July

Gallery open:
9am-3pm Tuesday-Friday
10am-2pm Saturday
