Present society regularly views knitting as “women’s work”, and more specifically as the work of old women. In doing so it also frequently dismisses and derides knitting as an unworthy occupation. The phrase “not your nana’s knitting” is regularly used to refer to something that is better than you might expect from knitting.
It is true that the vast majority of knitters in the western world today are women, but knitting was once considered men’s work too. Indeed, in some portions of history, the knitting realm was dominated by men.
