The 2022 Annual Ploughing match for North Canterbury Ploughing Match Assn and the Canterbury Clydesdale Club returns. The ploughing fields will be signposted from the entrance to 411 North Eyre Road, Swannanoa 7476.
Competitive ploughing involves three categories from throughout the South Island:
- Vintage ploughing – 2 or 3 furrow ploughs
- Horse team ploughing - 3 teams of 2 horses
- Silver Plough – modern reversible and conventional
Ploughmen range from the Novice to World ploughing competitors.
Meet the ploughmen from throughout Canterbury and Marlborough, practising the ancient skill of ploughing the land to expose the soil and weeds to the elements over the winter season in preparation for spring sowing of crops—before the days of spray and chemicals.
A special welcome to potential or retired ploughmen. Contact for entries is Bill Ward (Pres), phone (03) 313 4395 or txt/phone (027) 308 9953. Bring a thermos and picnic to enjoy the day. Please be aware that horses and tractors need a lot of space to turn at the end of rows.
Your safety is your responsibility. (Sorry, no dogs permitted on this sheep farming property - cameras welcome.)
