Three facts you should know about the year 1863: a choral masterpiece was created, City Choir was founded, and a very special harmonium was built! And these three facts come together in City Choir’s performance of Gioachino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle.
This masterpiece is as fresh as ever, essential Rossini, playful and decorative. The emphasis is on beautiful vocal melody. The soloists for this performance are Rebecca Ryan, Claire Barton, Jared Holt and Federico Freschi. The four soloists and choir (directed and conducted by David Burchell) are accompanied by an unusual chamber-sized ensemble: two grand pianos, and a harmonium. The harmonium, for those who do not know, is a free-reed keyboard instrument that has no pipes, also called a reed organ. It was a popular church and household instrument until the electronic organ took over in the 1930s.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear a live performance of Petite Messe Solennelle; it is neither small nor solemn!
