Volcanic rocks in North Otago were emplaced onto the Zealandia Oligocene continental shelf about 34 million years ago. Volcanism was dominated by short-lived clustered Surtseyan-like eruptions. The volcano at Kakanui also contains a geological rare but spectacular array of inclusions that tell us about the history of the lower crust and underlying mantle. James will explain how the volcanic field formed – and whether it will erupt again.
A presentation by James Scott:
James is an Associate Professor in Geology at the University of Otago. He grew up in Dunedin. His research interests include Earth’s mantle, mountain formation, mineralisation and meteorites.
