The APO’s own Ingrid Bauer takes centre stage in a champagne programme with a hint of cabaret.
‘Le boeuf sur le toit’ is now a fancy Paris restaurant, but in the Roaring Twenties it was an artists’ bar, lifting its name from Milhaud’s cheerful ballet. He was a regular, as was Tailleferre. Her sparkling concertino shares the bill with Debussy’s miniature masterpiece, which far transcends its origins as a demonstration work for a new type of harp.
Satie’s placid Gymnopédies are followed by Ravel’s very French take on the Viennese waltz, and the evening’s divertissement begins with a rarely heard tone-poem by Saint-Saëns. Santé!
