Formed as a theatre group in Ōtautahi in 1992, PU remains NZ's longest running Pacific performing arts group. The diversification of added events and music shows has been led by Tanya Muagututi’a and Pos Mavaega since 1999.
Pacific Underground was based at The Arts Centre in the Dux De Lux until the Canterbury earthquakes. Many of today’s famous Pacific artists and performers started through Pacific Underground, including Scribe and Ladi6, as well as well-known actors, and seeds were planted to launch the careers of many others.
The founding members of PU are Erolia Ifopo, Oscar Kightley, the late Michael Hodgson, Simon Small, Mishelle Muagututi'a, Vic Tamati, the late Matautia Losa Tamati-Luafutu, Tanya Muagututi'a, Pos Mavaega.
Read the recent interview with Pacific Underground co-founder Tanya Muagututi’a published in the Big Idea where she discusses letting the next generation take the reins.
Join an invited selection of these artists at The Arts Centre for an evening of reflection of life in Christchurch at The Arts Centre in the 1990s, how they started the organisation, some of the stories about being located at The Arts Centre in this formative period, and experience a short musical or theatrical performance.
