‘The Trestle At Pope Lick Creek’ invites you to race trains, break plates, sample our country’s deepest wounds, and become more than singular.
Written by Naomi Wallace, the play darts back and forth in time, piecing together fragments of a narrative that will shatter a small town. Here, the industry has burned itself out, leaving jobs scarce and hope slim. Two teenagers, at the centre of it all, seek their escapism in wild and savage ways.
Originally staged as an American play, directors Eva Greensill and Logan Brown have brought the piece to life in a way that feels poignant in Aotearoa; a coming-of-age story about racing trains and unexplained death, bound together by commentary on gender roles and New Zealand's capricious industrialism.
This production is staged as part of the Auckland Fringe Festival. It is also the first work to be produced by Something Obscure; a new theatre collective built by and for emerging artists. Something Obscure strives to understand the DNA of theatre, its successes, and its potential. The collective is driven to use social observation to craft performances which are confronting, relevant, and utterly explosive.
Please note that the play contains mature themes and is recommended for audiences 16+.
