Otago Museum’s new Kura Pounamu exhibition explores pounamu’s many complex and interrelated stories.
At this show and tell, Dr Simon Cox and Dr Nick Mortimer, principal scientists at GNS Science (the Crown Research Institute of Geological and Nuclear Science), look at the science of pounamu. Hear about the geological history and features of our special taoka, and get hands-on, examining jade and pounamu samples up-close.
This is your chance to ask those burning pounamu questions – what is the difference between jade, nephrite, and pounamu? What makes these rocks different and special? Why does pounamu only occur in Te Waipounamu (the South Island)? And how many types of pounamu are there?
In partnership with GNS Science.
