The International World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) is a light-hearted protest rally now held in more than 80 cities worldwide, attracting thousands of riders of all ages and backgrounds. Rides have been staged annually in Golden Bay and Dunedin for the past few years, but this ride at Waihi Beach - 2022, will be the first in the North Island.
The protest has these aims:
- Protest against the global dependency on oil
- Curb car culture
- Obtain real rights for cyclists
- Demonstrate the vulnerability of cyclists on city streets and the country's highways
In recent years an additional message has been added to encourage people towards better mental health by overcoming body shame, learning to celebrate your body and to accept the way you are.
There will be preparation time to set up your flags and banners, and for body and face painting before the ride. And there will be spot prizes at the end.
This is a Community event and all are welcome to take part. The video below shows highlights from the London WNBR in 2017. Let's make the Waihi Beach event a time to remember!
