Join us on the opening weekend of 'Brent Harris: The Other Side' for a very special opportunity to hear from the artist Brent Harris and curator Jane Devery. Together they will look at various artworks and moments in time throughout the exhibition to share insights into Harris’s practice.
'Brent Harris: The Other Side' surveys the work of contemporary artist Brent Harris and is the first comprehensive overview of Harris’s art to be exhibited in Aotearoa New Zealand. Comprising more than 40 works including paintings, prints and drawings, 'Brent Harris: The Other Side' traces themes that are central to Harris’s art including psychology and the subconscious realm; spirituality and religion; narrative and allegory; and the idea of searching for the self.
Jane Devery is Senior Curator, Exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia. She previously held the position of Curator, Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Victoria, Naarm/Melbourne, where she curated a survey exhibition on the work of Brent Harris in 2012. She lives and works on Gadigal Country/Sydney.
Brent Harris was born in Palmerston North, Aotearoa New Zealand. He relocated to Melbourne, Australia in 1981 and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1984. He is celebrated as one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists.
He has exhibited extensively in Australia and has featured in several notable international shows. Harris has been awarded a number of residencies including at Nagasawa Art Park, the Singapore Tyler Print Institute and the British School in Rome. He has also been the recipient of two grants from the Visual Arts/Craft Board of the Australia Council. His works are held in the collections of many large Australian and New Zealand institutions, including NGV, Art Gallery of New South Wales, QAGOMA, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. He lives and works in Melbourne.
