Irishman Andrew Kerr has made his home in Wellington, New Zealand since 1995. Growing up in a musical household, his early musical influences ranged from traditional Irish and folk music, alternative rock and metal to acoustic Mississippi blues. He left home in 1995 and became part of Wellington’s music scene, cutting his teeth in the Irish pub scene, mainly with Celtic rock outfit ‘Jacky Tar.’ They recorded three albums, one of which was a finalist in the NZ music awards and toured Northern Europe extensively from 1999 – 2004.
In more recent years, he has teamed up with the legendary Alan Norman (The Warratahs, The Rag Poets) on piano, accordion, percussion and backing vocals. Together they have honed a fluid and instinctive style based on mutual influences, including Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Ry Cooder and Paul Kelly. “I enjoy the pared-back approach that we naturally seem to find” says Alan.
Their debut album, ‘For the Record’ is out now; eight tracks including four originals from Andrew, two from Alan, with covers of Paul Kelly’s ‘Petrichor’ and ‘Raise the Road’ by Ronan O’Snodaigh also included. Tickets $25 from RBS web site
