Joel Fitzwell - Punches and Hallmarks

This one-day class will provide you with an introduction to making textured punches and hallmarks. Students will design a personal hallmark or textured punch and then use various hand tools and drills to create it.

Attending this class will teach you how to anneal tool steel, hand-make a textured punch or hallmark, and harden and temper steel.

This introduction to tool-making class will be suitable for jewellers looking to take their work to the next level with the addition of a personal hallmark or unique texture. The skills learned in this class can be applied to many custom tools in your home workshops, such as repoussé tools, textured hammers, and future hallmarks.

Tools are provided on the day, including one jeweller’s microscope, kindly supplied by Jens Hansen Gold and Silversmiths. Students are welcome to bring their own kit, particularly if they have a favourite set of fine needle files and a piercing saw.

Fully covered shoes are a must, and please wear comfortable clothing suitable for a workshop.
