It’s Life Drawing – but not as we know it.

This class asks you to be open, mindful and present. It’s both challenging and freeing if you are willing to let your hair down.

What if life drawing could be different? What if you weren’t asked to copy the human form in an academic way or worry about getting the proportions exactly right?
This is a super fun workshop where laughter is not uncommon.

We often work at speed so the analytical mind doesn’t have a chance to hinder us with its preconceptions. We are mindful, paying attention to the instructions, our instruments, mark making, rhythms, energies and all this while using both hands, at the same time, or our feet, or working to music.
It’s challenging for sure – but it can also be very liberating.

As a result, our work is full of movement and energy.

The approach is based on British artist Cecil Collins whose teaching methods focus on creative spontaneity and free expression encouraging students to connect with the energy of the subject in a non-analytical way. It is not about copying the human form but connecting with its energy of it. Ralph Hotere studied under Cecil Collins when he lived in London. While I lived there, I was fortunate to study under another one of Cecil's students and dear friend, Jeremy Gale.

No experience is needed. The greener you are the better for you.

The sessions are not successive, you can start at any point.

We have supplies for your first session and after that, you can decide if you wish to buy any of your own. You will need to purchase paper. We do a lot of drawings in a session.

Please bring 3 small jars (like baby food or pate jars). We will make up 3 different tones of ink.
