Michael Houstoun, New Zealand's most acclaimed and treasured pianist, has chosen a stunning programme for this recital. He will open with the music of J S Bach - the early Toccata in C minor, which alternates between improvisatory flourishes, adagios and fugues. This is followed by Brahms' Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Handel. Handel's simple little tune unfolds through twenty-five amazingly inventive variations to a brilliant closing fugue in what has been described as one of the greatest sets of variations ever written.
The second part of the concert moves to the Romantic period, introduced by two gentle Chopin pieces - the Berceuse and Impromptu in F#. The balance of the programme is devoted to a luscious and varied selection of Preludes and Etudes-Tableaux by Rachmaninoff.
