Tūngia te ururua kia tupu whakaritorito te tupu o te harakeke.
Set the overgrown bush alight and the new flax shoots will spring up.

Nau mai haere mai, all are welcome to attend an introduction and beyond to raranga (weaving) with harakeke (flax).

Led by Frank Topia (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Haua) with Linda Lee (Ngāti Kurī, Ngāi Tākoto, Te Rawara, Te Aupōri, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Huia, Ngāti Hainemana, Ngāti Pākehā) and kaiāwhina (helpers).

Starting with tikanga and making putiputi (flowers) kono and konae (small containers), over time, continued participants develop their skills to craft more complex objects such as baskets, wahakura and kete.

Advancing weavers are welcome to attend our modules which work towards specific learning outcomes. Keep your eye out!

For beginners, harakeke and other tools will be provided until you have been taught tikanga for harvesting your own. When purchasing your ticket add the free "I'm a Beginner - Please harvest for me" ticket so I know to harvest for you. We harvest for the first two classes while you learn tikanga and how to identify harakeke and locations to hauhake (harvest).

If you want us to harvest for you please try to book at least three days in advance.

You will walk away with woven taonga at the end of each class.

We hold weekend and weeknight classes and occasional wānanga (longer classes to refine techniques learned in the shorter classes indicated in ticket details).

For some wānanga we will have special guest Roger (Zap) Haenga (Porourangi) from Taniwha Noa introducing you to rongoā.

No experience is required. Please arrive on time for karakia (blessing).

Please BYO water bottle, blanket/towel and regulars bring available tools such as scissors, pegs, bobby pins, butter knife, sharp knife, tarpaulin, bucket for para (waste), haehae, hapene etc.

Rongoā (Māori healing) tea and other light refreshments will be provided and you are welcome to bring shared kai.

Children under 14 should be accompanied by an adult with a ticket.

Any questions contact: OtariKakano4@gmail.com

Occasionally, we will be moved to the Tāne Whakapirpiri Visitor's Centre due to other bookings. Please refer www.otariraranga.wordpress.com (upcoming classes) where venues will be specified for the class.
