There are no rules in scriptwriting, only principles. Learn how your favourite movies are built from these principles and begin to create your own.
You will develop and build on your writing skills so you can confidently produce a scripted narrative. You will learn how the basics of scriptwriting work - covering everything from Aristotle to Tarantino.
Topics discussed and practised include the hero’s journey, script format, the differences between writing for film, theatre and television, creating dialogue, world-building and more.
In each session, we will share our writing that has been completed over the week. We’ll take part in exercises, watch clips and have group discussions. There will always be a focus on detailed feedback on your work - all of this working towards having the template and building blocks created for your first screenplay so you are ready to finish writing it.
Bring a pen and paper.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- See film, television, and theatre with a new lens for the way scripted stories work.
- Develop character arcs and dynamics and work with subtext
- Create and build worlds as well as write effective dialogue
- Form and create your own creative principles that you will continue to stand by and develop as you continue to create
- Have the confidence to receive and give feedback
- Have the confidence to put your work out into the world
