The role of community in supporting those affected by suicide is the focus of a Remembrance Picnic being hosted by Grief Support Services on Sunday, November 17, at Te Puna Quarry Park in Tauranga. The event aims to provide a comforting space for individuals who have lost loved ones to suicide.
“This event underscores the crucial role of community in recognising and supporting each other through the difficult experience of losing someone to suicide,” says Jeanette Jones, Suicide Bereavement Support Coordinator at Grief Support Services.
Attendees are invited to bring their own picnic along with food to share that reminds them of their loved one or that they find comforting. A special remembrance area will be set up to share photos of those lost to suicide, offering a space for reflection and tribute.
“This event is designed to be a family-friendly occasion,” adds Jeanette. “We’ll have entertainment, a sausage sizzle, and a team of face painters looking forward to creating some fun and happiness. Children are welcome with parental discretion, and our team of peer supporters and counsellors will be available to provide informal support.”
Grief Support Services has previously had an annual tradition of gathering the community for a memorial service around the time of World Suicide Prevention Day, which was observed in September. This year they are focussing on providing a supportive environment closer to Christmas time in which those who have experienced suicide loss can connect and find solace together.
The remembrance picnic will take place from midday to 3pm on Sunday, November 17, at Te Puna Quarry Park, Tauranga and is free of charge, though donations are welcome.
