Darren Watson stands as a prominent figure in the New Zealand blues scene, recognized for his soulful guitar playing, evocative vocals, and compelling storytelling. His journey through music has been marked by a dedication to the craft, an exploration of diverse musical influences, and an unwavering connection to his roots.
Throughout his career, Darren Watson has had the opportunity to tour with and work alongside many legendary artists. These include local legends like Midge Marsden, Bill Lake, and Terry Casey, as well as international legends such as Billy Boy Arnold, Tony Joe White, Robert Cray, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Keb' Mo', Koko Taylor, Eric Burdon, and Emmylou Harris. These experiences have not only enriched his musical experience but have also helped him refine his craft and expand his artistic horizons. Watson says he was influenced and inspired by a diverse range of artists, and he often reflects on the eclectic mix that has shaped his musical journey. "I’ve always drawn inspiration from a wide array of musicians," Watson explains. "Robert Cray’s soulful guitar work, Muddy Waters’ power, Elvis Costello’s sharp songwriting, Tom Waits’ eclectic storytelling, Aimee Mann’s poignant lyricism, and Steve Earle’s gritty realism along with his solid leftist values—all these artists have profoundly influenced my music. Their ability to convey deep emotion and tell compelling stories through their songs has always been something I strive to emulate in my own work. Hopefully more and more with my own ‘voice’ and style as time passes."
