Israel in Egypt is one of George Frederic Handel’s most recognized oratorios, after Messiah, and it tells the dramatic biblical story of the Israelites’ escape from slavery in Egypt. After a series of ten plagues falls on Egypt, Pharaoh is persuaded to let the Israelites go. He agrees to let them depart, but changes his mind and pursues them. The Red Sea miraculously parts to let the Israelites cross in safety, but when the pursuing Egyptians try to cross, the waters cover them, and they are drowned.
Our Musical Director will be Nigel Williams, with guests Douglas Mews (organ), Elizabeth Mandeno, (soprano), and Jessica Wells (alto).
Israel in Egypt is a substantial oratorio in two parts (although we will be presenting a slightly shortened version) and there will be a short interval between the two.
