If you've been eager to learn the Maori art of flax weaving, join us for a hands-on workshop where you'll delve into the world of harakeke and create a putiputi (flower) and a kono (4-corner basket). Designed for beginners, this session offers a chance to explore the rich history and traditions of this ancient craft.
Led by experienced weaver Atawhai, the workshop will cover how to harvest and prepare harakeke, explain the protocols (tikanga) surrounding its use, and demonstrate basic weaving techniques. Participants will complete small projects, turning raw flax into beautiful creations.
Atawhai will provide all necessary tools, and participants will gather their own harakeke in the Riverside area under her guidance. This immersive experience, held at the Riverside Café, ensures personalized support in a small group setting. Don't miss this unique opportunity to blend learning with leisure!
Limited to 8 participants. $35 a person. Bookings close Thursday, 10th October at 2pm. Book here: https://www.riverside.org.nz/event-details/harakeke-flax-weaving-for-beginners
This workshop is proudly sponsored by the Riverside Community Trust. Please contact Tanja (at education@riverside.org.nz) for workshop questions or to ask about sponsorship options.
