Through a female perspective, ‘Intertwined Narratives’ explores how interpretations of identity, memory and place are shaped and transformed over time. Esme Lansdowne, Emma Hercus & Aida Smith examine these universal themes with distinct approaches, interweaving their own personal narratives.
Emma Hercus’s semi-abstract paintings use thick layers of brushy acrylics to depict the people and places from her daily life, layering familial histories with imaginative scenes and characters. Aida Smith’s figurative still life paintings explore subjects that are close to her, reflecting motherhood through the language of food. Her simplified forms and delicate palette present a serene world on a table top. Esme Lansdowne's organic forms navigate a desire to connect with the landscape. Through the use of earth pigments, her work mirrors the landscape's textures and hues.
Some paintings are still and languid, with the long shadows of a Summer’s afternoon, while others contain a liveliness and immediacy. Despite their differences, the simple pleasures of everyday life are present and each painting is autobiographical; drawing from concepts of identity and storytelling. Painting memories allows them to be reimagined, creating a personal folklore of sorts - in contrast to the accuracy of present-day occurrences. These mappings of personal experience are autotheoretical, emphasising that the process of creating the paintings holds as much significance as their content.
