Te Waka Huia Wellington Museum and Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision present a moving history of Wellington.
A mix of amateur and professional footage from 1908 – 1996, these films show the city’s technological and social change across time.
The early film portrays Wellington as a busy outpost of the British Empire. As history in motion, these films gradually unveil an appreciation for our unique landscapes and mana whenua perspectives, as Wellington develops its identity.
This exhibition was developed by Wellington Museum in partnership with Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision.
Footage in the exhibition is courtesy of Archives New Zealand, the TVNZ collection at Ngā Taonga, depositors and kaitiaki.
