Acclaimed German pianist Michael Endres, well-known to Waikanae audiences for his stunning solo recitals, is joined by New Zealand violinist Mark Menzies for a Waikanae Music Society concert on Sunday 18 August. Both artists, who first connected through their work at the University of Canterbury, have established international careers. Multi-talented Mark Menzies, violinist, conductor, composer and pianist, has been described as an “extraordinary musician” and a “riveting violinist”. Michael Endres, whose multiple competition successes include the International Schubert Competition, has held teaching positions at universities in Germany, Norway and New Zealand, and performs worldwide as a soloist and chamber music partner.
The duo will perform a varied and demanding programme, opening with a sprightly Mozart Sonata. New Zealand composer Salina Fisher’s Japanese-inspired Mono no aware, which reflects on the delicacy and impermanence of cherry blossom, will contrast with Schubert’s striking and demanding Rondo Brilliant, one of the showpieces of the violin repertoire. After the interval the lush romanticism of Richard Strauss’s Sonata in Eb will round out a very satisfying afternoon of music.
