Comedian Jess Karamjeet had plans – ambitious ones and downright evil ones – but lately she’s been feeling redundant. Her dad died, and she’s in the queer dating-pool again after four years. There’s also the tiny issue of being a writer and performer with cuts on the horizon...

But Jess is fighting! ‘Redundant’ is a rally cry for creatives, misfits and contradictory humans: an hour of stand-up and songs navigating queer and bi-racial identity, grief, and the taboo powers of hidden disabilities.

Jess Karamjeet is a rising star in the comedy circuit, having performed at the ‘Best Comedy Show On Earth’ at Sky City Theatre for the NZICF 2023 alongside Eli Mathewson and Hayley Sproull, and named ‘One To Watch’ by the New Zealand Comedy Trust. A version of REDUNDANT was awarded four stars by ArtsHub Australia at the prestigious 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

As a disabled, queer and bi-racial woman, Jess’s comedy and storytelling focuses on uplifting unheard voices – present within the kaupapa of all her creative pursuits. Alongside comedy, Jess’s screenwriting credits include soap-operas around the world, and was recently awarded development funding from NZ On Air to craft a semi-autobiographical comedy drama series about disability. She’s also finishing up a psychological thiller feature film, funded by the NZ Writers’ Guild and NZ Film Commission.

Jess is also the founder of PACSA (Laughs) – the Pan-Asian Comedy School Aotearoa, funded by Foundation North via the Asian Arts Fund. The first of its kind, PACSA (Laughs) helps diverse creatives to segue into stand-up comedy, armed with training sessions, 1:1 writing and a graduation show. It aims to address the deficit of these voices in the comedy industry (in the wake of eleven billed Pan-Asian performers at the NZICF 2023).
