‘Waves of Reflection’ by Swiss-Kiwi artist Sarah Albisser invites the viewer to pause and reflect in an age of constant motion. Her new series captures the essence of contemplation as a vital practice for both personal and collective well-being, presenting it as a deeper engagement with reality, rather than a form of escape. Dark skies symbolise our collective longing for peace, while golden skies reflect the courage required to welcome new beginnings. Vast empty spaces invite freedom and tranquillity, allowing the mind to settle and reflect.
Albisser’s background as a contemporary dancer and choreographer profoundly influences both her life and artistic practice. Her fascination with movement and self-expression has, over the past decade, culminated in a striking series of black-and-white portraits, focusing on female faces and characters. After seventeen years of working in black and white, Albisser is now incorporating metallic colours into her repertoire.
Her works capture form, emotion, and fleeting moments in time, often leaving sections of the canvas intentionally unfinished—an invitation for the viewer to engage, interpret, and complete the piece with their own imagination.
Over the past three years, Albisser has delved into a more minimal, surreal style as an extension of her earlier work. She has come to understand that while it is easier to fill a space than to leave it empty, both elements are essential and require careful balance. By stripping away the unnecessary, she presents scenarios with simplicity, offering viewers the opportunity to craft their own stories.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, in Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia and Los Angeles, and is now part of private collections worldwide.
Join us for the opening night of Sarah Albisser’s solo exhibition on Thursday, 31 October at 5pm, with refreshments generously provided by our sponsors, Viktor Vavricka, Ambassador of Switzerland to New Zealand, and Arobake.
