Exhibition opening of works by Theo Janssen, at Fareham Gallery on Friday 6 December at 4.00pm.
A selection of acrylics where Theo explores the relationship between rocky landscapes and the female form, oils landscapes inspired by New Zealand places and pastel life drawings.
Theo was a Pae tū Mōkai resident for 18 years until recently. He was renowned for his sculptures, stained glass and mosaics, and spent a lifetime creating art that is recognised and celebrated by galleries and collectors.
Theo was born in Belfeld, in the Netherlands, in 1934. He studied under various Dutch artists and assisted on major stained-glass and mosaic projects in Europe. His work can be found in public buildings in Delft, Brussels and other European cities. Self-taught as a modeller and sculptor, Theo moved to New Zealand in 1958, where he won the prestigious Banks Competition in 1966 for a mural created with baked enamels. He became well-known for large-scale public works, including stained-glass windows at St Mary’s Church in Wellington and a bronze sculpture at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Later in his career, his drawings and paintings show a confidence and mastery of form and line that comes only from decades of practice.
The exhibition will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1.00pm to 5.00pm and will run throughout 2024 into 2025.
