Expand your knowledge of traditional folk tunes, techniques, and etiquette. Build a repertoire of music played at pubs, festivals, community centers, and campfires around the world. Immerse yourself in the rich culture of melodies and rhythms that have brought musicians, dancers, and listeners together for centuries.
We begin each class by learning a new tune on instruments that are featured in a typical session. Learn the role of various melody instruments (fiddle, mandolin, whistle etc) and rhythm instruments (guitar, bodhran) along with basic techniques.
All ages and ability levels are welcome as many of the principles to be covered apply to many acoustic instruments. Our current instructors are mostly experienced with guitar, fiddle, mandolin, Irish whistle and bodhran and group classes may break out by instrument depending on the number of participants. While the pace is aimed at people who can already play their instruments, it’s still a great opportunity for beginners and I’d encourage you to attend if you’re interested in learning trad music.
When: Mondays from 4-6pm (Instruction: 4-5pm, Session / tune review: 5-6pm)
Where: The Old Library
Fee: $10 suggested donation per session (to cover room rental)
