Ahi Karunaharan, hands down one of our finest theatremakers, has picked 17 nostalgic pop tracks to chart the deeply moving journey of Sangeetha and her family in 1950s Sri Lanka. Taking us from innocent times through to decades of civil war, to a new life in modern-day Aotearoa, this unforgettable saga is a testament to the storytelling power of good music. After presenting a reading of mixtape in 2023, we are honoured to be uplifting Ahi’s beautiful play and an all-South Asian cast to the main stage, where it deserves the biggest applause.

Ahilan ‘Ahi’ Karunaharan is an award-winning director, writer, dramaturg, actor and producer championing South Asian storytelling across stage and screen in Aotearoa. He was born in the UK, raised in Sri Lanka and is based in Tāmaki Makaurau. In 2020 he was made an Arts Foundation Laureate. As a playwright he’s acclaimed for The Mourning After, the first full-length Sri Lankan play in Aotearoa; Tea, which premiered at AAF 2018; and My Heart Goes Thadak Thadak (Silo Theatre). a mixtape for maladies was performed as a play reading at AAF 2023. This presentation is the first full production of the play.
