About the event
This workshop is the next step after Ray's Beginner Calligraphy. If you've been through Ray's beginner series, or want to level up on your existing calligraphy skills, then this workshop is for you!

In this course you'll learn how to create your own illuminations (coloured lettering). You'll continue the use of pens with ink and learn more about brushes and watercolour.

Participants will complete the course with both a black name, quotation and illumination, as well as, coloured version of their choosing.

Ray will provide suitable illuminated letters for these final pieces. Participants can bring along their own to use, if they wish.

Ray Crafts is a silver and goldsmith, a carpenter, a veteran soldier, a bagpiper, a luthier, a potter and an exhibiting artist. He is inspired greatly by celtic art and design which he incorporates into his woodwork and pottery. He also smiths silver Scottish Dirks and Sgian Dhus and other Scottish jewellery. And, of course, he is a calligrapher and calligraphy teacher!

'At the age of 9, I was taught copperplate writing by my Grandfather, and from this bases come my interest in illuminated manuscripts, and the study of the book of Kells and early pictish art. Pens and nibs were handed down to me from my Grandfather and with these I did calligraphy works for friends. I gained placing in a Calligraphic Creative Writing Competition and my work was sent over to Philadelphia U.S.A to go on permanent exhibition'.

You can catch Ray crafting down at the Men's Shed, here at the Historic Village.
