Biochar is a charcoal-like material made from organic waste that's used to improve soil and the environment. It’s made from biomass that's been partially combusted in a limited oxygen environment. The process of making biochar is called pyrolysis, and it involves heating organic materials like wood, manure, or crop residues to temperatures between 300–1000°C.
How it's used
Biochar can be used in many ways. This workshop will focus on it as a soil amendment. It can improve plant health and store carbon in soil. It can be used on its own or blended with other soil amendments. The following helpful video shows how to use it in your garden

Properties
Biochar's properties depend on the material it's made from and the temperature at which it's made. All biochar is rich in carbon and doesn't decompose easily.
Benefits
Biochar can provide many of the same benefits as compost, like retaining water and nutrients, but it can last for hundreds or thousands of years.
Comparison to compost
Compost breaks down within a year in hot, humid climates, while biochar can last much longer.
