"Layers: Portraits in Deconstruction" is an exhibition that delves into the modern phenomenon of self-representation and identity construction through the lens of pop culture and social media imagery.

This curated collection features artworks derived from staged social media images, which Jarom has deconstructed and reinterpreted using various mediums and techniques. The exhibition highlights key themes such as the fluidity of identity, the tension between authenticity and artifice, the fragmentation and reconstruction of selfhood, and the influence of pop culture on personal identity. By dissecting and reconstructing these staged images, the artworks provoke reflection on the constructed nature of online personas and invite viewers to reconsider their perceptions of self and others in the digital age.

"Layers: Portraits in Deconstruction" challenges conventional notions of portraiture and offers a critical commentary on the evolving dynamics of self-representation, encouraging thoughtful discourse on the impact of social media on contemporary identity.

Jarom Gudgeon is a Māori, contemporary portrait artist whose work explores the dynamic interplay between pop culture, social media, and the online image. Based in Hamilton, Jarom has cultivated a unique artistic style that captures the essence of the digital age, blending traditional portrait techniques with modern influences. His work delves into the fragmented identities created by the online world, where personas are curated, filtered, and often distorted for public consumption.
