Upcycling Workshop

Sunday the 5th January 2025, 1pm - approx 2 hours
Location: Richmond, Christchurch
All materials included. $75 pp

A fun and educational workshop that encourages you to bring new life back to your wardrobe by injecting it with locally grown botanical colour!

We'll use a range of natural dye techniques (including submersion dyeing, bundle dye and tataki zome) to create unique one of a kind colour and designs on your pre-loved clothing or fabrics. We'll go through a brief overview of natural dye basics prior to carrying out our dye techniques, first on some samples then on your garments - you will have the opportunity to harvest seasonal flowers directly from my dye garden to create beautiful colours and patterns on fabric. Finally we will cover fabric care and how best to look after your upcycled fabrics to ensure long-lasting colour.

Two items can be upcycled at the workshop - please note that these must be dropped of/ delivered to me in Richmond, Christchurch more than 2 weeks prior to the event in order for them to be scoured and mordanted prior to the workshop (this is a time consuming process and cannot be done on the day, but is essential to ensure long lasting colour). All garments or fabrics to be upcycled must be of a natural fibre, synthetic materials such as polyester and Nylon will have below average results.

This will be a small intimate group, with no more than 10 people, held outside in my garden in Richmond, Ōtautahi – this is a weather-dependent event (will be rescheduled to Sunday 12 January if the weather is inappropriate). I recommend wearing clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting marked, or instead, perhaps bringing along an apron.

Materials included:
- scouring and mordanting materials
- 1/2 x cotton/linen sample square (these can be used for some fun at-home crafting / sewing projects)
- all the tools and direction required for various natural dyeing techniques
- all plant material

Please note before purchasing a ticket:

- This is not a wheelchair accessible event.
- This event is for +16 year old event
- This is an outdoor event in a garden setting. As such there will be hazards such as uneven ground and hoses. There will be minimal shade, so I recommend dressing appropriately for the weather conditions on the day and ideally wearing a hat. Sunscreen can be provided.
- As this is a weather-dependent event - please ensure you are available for the replacement date of Sunday 12th Jan should the weather decide not to play ball! Refunds will not be given if unable to make the 2nd date.
- Refunds will be on a case-by-case basis but as a small business, I unfortunately cannot refund any tickets that are cancelled within a week prior to the event.
