Clay Bodvin

with the ending of one era, the starting of another...

For over 3 decades local artist Clay Bodvin has lived on Huia Road in Titirangi, re-inventing the still life - a focus which included an examination of the genre’s history as well as how those works of so-called ‘trivial objects’ interacted with portraiture (and occasionally the odd landscape or two).

Bodvin stepped away from bricks n’ mortar exhibiting over a decade ago, but has continued with work that illuminated this connected-history described above, also translating that interest into short still-frame animations.

Extracts from his usable past - eg, bric a brac around the house, old family photos, travel snapshots - are all used with digitally-scanned images of textiles and stills from videos of everyday objects < see Celeste >

The work was often considered to be an autobiographical-investigation merging with the 'luxurious nature of everyday things'. But times and motivations have changed - and a departure from Huia Rd (the haven for all this creative output) is now under way.

To wit, for the first time in over 35yrs, this magical property < see Bayleys > is on the market and is a must-see experience for those who appreciate art and careful attention-to-detail - both inside the house and out.

New adventures and directions are on the horizon for Clay Bodvin and his wife and fellow-artist Jacqui. But there is still an opportunity to engage with and be a part of the transformational change for this long-time Titirangi resident.

If all goes according to plan, a move to Matamata is scheduled to oversee a new-build duplex - duplex being the American notion of a townhouse, referring back to Clay’s American roots. As an aside ,< The Interview > (also on the Bayleys site), was considered by his US cousins to be a great impression of an artistic-James-Bond-type of character, eg, look/style and the mixture of accents (but no comment from Bodvin himself).

So engage with Jock Kooger, register to experience this artistic way to live, and meet the artists while they’re still there.
