"Where the Wild Things Art" is the next exhibition at the Akaroa Art Gallery commencing Saturday 25th January. This exciting exhibition is by two well known Akaroa artists Ant Bentley and Jennifer Maxwell. Ant, originally from Auckland has spent most of his life living on the peninsula providing him with ample inspiration, which coalesced Ant into creating iconic pencil drawings of the heritage buildings that line the streets of historic Akaroa. Ant has always had a fascination with the play between light and colour especially across the hills and harbour of Akaroa. Ant's shift to acrylics brings to life landscapes that captures this interplay and are also interlaced with charming and often tiny details such as boats and buildings.
Jennifer Maxwell has worked as a ceramicist for more than 30 years making eccentric animals in stoneware and porcelain, exhibiting and running workshops. Jennifer abandoned her clay and kilns following the Canterbury earthquakes and with her husband turned to travel, hosting tours in France and painting. Following a death in her family Jennifer was drawn back down the rabbit hole in search of solace and comfort of the past where she found at her fingertips somewhat peculiar old and new friends. She continues to create her wild things today emerging from nothing at all with each telling a story.
Spend a day visiting beautiful Akaroa and stop off at the quaint little community gallery to see this fascinating exhibition with something for everyone.
