The Skatalites Announce New Zealand Tour
The group, who are best known for their singles Tear Up, Guns of Navarone and Ball of Fire, will be performing in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
The Skatalites first formed in 1964 and were named after the recently launched Sputnik satellite. They went on to define the sound of ska in the '50s and 60s, backing some of the leading artists of the day, including Bob Marley, Alton Ellis and Toots and the Maytals. The first incarnation of The Skatalites were only together for 14 months, and rejoined on and off through the 1970's, before reforming for good in the mid-'80s.
They have had a changing lineup over their 50 years, and the upcoming New Zealand tour will see the nine-person group bring original vocalist Doreen Shaffer, also known as the First Lady of Ska.
