Globe Theatre To Pop Up In Auckland

Pop-up Globe Auckland is a full-scale working temporary replica of Shakespeare’s second Globe Theatre, the result of groundbreaking international academic research.

With a steel frame ‘skinned’ in plywood the Pop-up Globe fuses cutting-edge scaffold technology with 400-year-old designs and superb contemporary performances to create an immersive 360 degree experience unlike any other.

Wherever in the theatre you sit or stand, you’ll be within 15m of the action on stage and surrounded on all sides by people sharing the same space and experience.

The result: an incredibly intimate shared experience, people all around you laughing, booing, clapping. Shakespeare today, alive, like a party.

Pop-up Globe Theatre Company will present some of Shakespeare's greatest works including his brilliant comedy Twelfth Night, and the immortal Romeo & Juliet.

These masterpieces are performed by a cast of professional actors brought together into a new, specially-formed ensemble repertory company, that have worked with world experts to bring you the so-called 'shock of the old': the experience of seeing Shakespeare’s plays performed in the space for which they were written.

Pop-up Globe artistic director Dr Miles Gregory says Shakespeare’s Globe is one of the most important theatres in history. “Our aim is to recreate as faithfully as possible this original performance space so Pop-up Globe’s audience can enjoy the remarkable experience of Shakespeare’s own audience 400 years ago.”

Nestled in Auckland’s cultural precinct, next door to the Town Hall, across from the Aotea Centre and directly behind Q Theatre, this full-scale temporary working replica of Shakespeare’s famous Globe Theatre will literally ‘pop up’ for a strictly limited period, feature two of Shakespeare’s most famous works, Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night, then disappear.

Romeo & Juliet
In a divided society, a boy and a girl meet. Their forbidden love will change their world - and yours - forever. This production with a contemporary setting takes a fresh look at the world's most famous love story.

Twelfth Night
A young girl and her identical twin brother are shipwrecked on a strange shore. Separated, and believing the other dead, they are transformed by their adventures in a land where intoxicating love is in the very air. Set in 1616, the year of Shakespeare’s death, and performed by an authentic all-male cast in bespoke Jacobean costume, Twelfth Night is a masterclass in laugh-out-loud comedy.
