Award-winning photojournalism returns to Auckland!

The prestigious exhibition of award-winning photos that capture the very best in global photojournalism has confirmed its return to Auckland's Smith and Caughey Level 6 Gallery Space, Queen Street from Saturday 30 June to Sunday 29 July 2018, thanks to the Rotary Club of Auckland.

The World Press Photo Contest honours the incredible talents of press photographers who show great skill and creativity in capturing an event or issue of great journalistic importance from the past year. The exhibition shows in over 100 cities and 45 countries, reaching a global audience of 4 million people each year.

The jury of the 2018 Photo Contest selected Venezuelan photographer Ronald Schemidt's image as the World Press Photo of the Year. The picture entitled 'Venezuela Crisis' also won first prize in the Spot News Single category. The image shows José Víctor Salazar Balza (28) on fire amid violent clashes with riot police during a protest against President Nicolás Maduro, in Caracas, Venezuela. Salazar was set alight when the gas tank of a motorbike exploded. He survived the incident with first and second-degree burns.

New Zealand also features in one of the photographs that made the 2018 exhibition cut with Irish photographer Stephen McCarthy's image 'Steaming Scrum' coming second place in the Sport Singles Category. The image shows The British & Irish Lions and Maori All Blacks engaging during a match at Rotorua International Stadium.

The 2018 the Word Press Photo contest drew entries from around the world: 4,548 photographers from 125 countries submitted 73,044 images. The jury gave prizes in eight categories to 42 photographers.
