Randy Newman announces first-ever NZ dates in 2020

Critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter Randy Newman has announced three New Zealand 'An Evening With Randy Newman' tour dates for 2020 in support of his acclaimed album, 'Dark Matter'. On what will be his first ever tour of the country, he'll be taking in Auckland's Civic Theatre, Wellington's The Opera House and Christchurch's Isaac Theatre Royal in February.

Randy is an acclaimed music virtuoso known for his distinctive voice, mordant (and often satirical) pop songs and film scores. After breaking onto the music scene in the early '60s, he's released an extensive list of captivating songs like 'You Got A Friend In Me' and 'I Will Go Sailing No More' that saw him gain a global cult-following. He began recording in 1968 with a self-titled album, and throughout the 1970s, he's released several other acclaimed albums such as '12 Songs', 'Sail Away', and 'Good Old Boys'.

He began composing and scoring for films in the 1980s, and his work includes all four 'Toy Story' pictures, 'A Bug's Life', 'Cars' and 'Cars 3'. Last 2017, he's released his eleventh album 'Dark Matter'—the follow-up to 2008's best-selling 'Harps and Angels'—which earned rave reviews from fans and critics alike. Most recently, his 'The Randy Newman Songbook' came out, comprising solo recordings of songs from throughout his five-decade career. Randy's many honours include seven Grammys Awards, three Emmy Awards, and two Academy Awards, as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013—the same year he was given an Ivor Novello PRS for Music Special International Award.

"Few songwriters can cut to the quick the way Newman does. He remains a great American songbook unto himself." – Guardian

"In Newman's best music he leaves you wondering where you stand, what you think, what you believe, how the world works." – Pitchfork

"Newman has a knack for writing songs that are so attuned to what’s going on in the U.S. that they become predictive, articulating uncomfortable thoughts that are in the air but had theretofore gone unarticulated." – Vanity Fair
