Traditionally performed at Christmas time, this awe-inspiring oratorio has moments of rare beauty, intense anguish and emphatic celebration. Composed in 1741, this piece is one of the most treasured choral works, indeed one of the cornerstones of Western music. With the monumental Hallelujah chorus at its centre, this work also boasts some of the most sublime solo and chorus music in the repertoire, including the wondrous tenor aria, Comfort ye … Every valley shall be exalted and the magnificent soprano aria Rejoice greatly, o daughter of Zion.
