Matariki Bay of Islands

Journey to the Bay of Islands this July to celebrate Matariki in one of Aotearoa’s most culturally significant and magnificent regions. The Bay of Islands Matariki Festival will run from Friday, 2nd July – Sunday 11th July, featuring over 20 free and ticketed events around the area, with local businesses jumping on board to offer speciality experiences for residents and visitors.

MATARIKI is a time to gather together, to reflect, celebrate and plan for the future with friends and whanau. The rising of Matariki, or the star cluster known as Pleiades, usually occurs near the end of June and the beginning of July, it heralds in the Maori New Year, Te Tau Hou Maori. Iwi mark the start of the Maori New Year in different ways around the country and we acknowledge and embrace all beliefs and traditions in our rohe (region).

Feed your mind, body and soul with events that include story-telling, cultural experiences, Matariki inspired feasts, vineyard tours, music, family fun and some of the best star-gazing opportunities in the land.

Not to be missed is Tohunga Tumau, a culinary experience hosted at the iconic Duke of Marlborough Hotel where an all-star line-up of Māori master chefs including the Hangi Master, Rewi Spraggon, Grant Kitchen, Tu Fearn and Tama Salive will present a four-course menu indigenous to Aotearoa, hosted by MC Tammy Davis.

More events include Fullers GreatSights Matariki Dawn Cruises, astrophotography, rāranga (weaving), rongoā (traditional medicines) workshops, music from The Harmonic Resonators and White Chapel Jak and a fun new event, The Manu Masters, where you can show off your manu bombing skills from Russell Wharf to win great prizes!
