Lōemis Festival

Lōemis presents a fantastical winter offering staged during the darkest nights of the year. Now in its 7th year, the festival showcases a vibrant array of new shows, bespoke food events, installations and craft workshops, culminating with a fiery solstice event on Wellington's waterfront.   The festival takes in multiple venues across the city, with some highlights including:  

Elevation: Time Scales, 10 - 21 June. Ruby Solly’s beautiful new taonga pūoro composition, which responds in real time to your elevation, via an app, as you walk up Mt. Victoria.  

Bio Electricity, 15 June. Electronic music at the Begonia House featuring Toby Laing (The Labcoats, Fat Freddy’s Drop); Parks (Honzoh, Ladi6); and Riki Gooch (Orchestra of Spheres, Mara TK, Cave Circles)  

Silent Shorts, 16 June. Composer and musician Justin Firefly (Shades of Shakti, Congress of Animals, Fly My Pretties) has written three new scores to be performed live with an ensemble for a series of brilliant silent shorts at the Roxy Cinema.  

Fantasia, 18 June. Jake Baxendale (Richter City Rebels, Arthur St. Loft Orchestra, The Jac) and Michael Costeloe (Bazurka, Royal New Zealand Air Force Band) hit town with an epic, one-off 10-piece big band gig that continues a musical thread that has run through the festival since it began in 2016. 

Pests, Plants and Poisons, 19 June. Four of Wellington’s top chefs combine for this magical, one-off event at Zealandia: a multi-course degustation that explores an array of tasty wild foods, plants and drinks.
